NEMA 4X enclosures provide the same level of indoor-outdoor protection as a NEMA 4 enclosure but with the addition of corrosion protection. Bud’s enclosures that meet this requirement are made from ABS plastic, polycarbonate plastic, fiberglass, and die cast-aluminum, which are inherently corrosion resistant.
This is why many NEMA 4 enclosures are also rated NEMA 4X. A NEMA 4X box is gasketed and tightly sealed against air-blown dust and contaminants. It also blocks the intrusion of hose directed water, making it an excellent choice for factory washdown and outdoor applications. See NEMA 4 selection tips.
Some common uses include housing electronics located outdoors—such as solar and lighting controls, agricultural equipment, wi-fi points, and oilfield equipment. Rain, ice, and wind should not penetrate a NEMA 4X enclosure. Indoor applications include housing controls inside manufacturing and processing plants where machinery is washed down with a hose, such as in food processing and powder handling. NEMA 4X test requirements including spraying the enclosure with salty water.
It should be noted that NEMA rated boxes are routinely modified with holes for power and signal cables, openings for displays and indicators, and space for switches, buttons, and dials.
